I do not understand why this modem has not been approved for so long a time. Both Motorola and Comcast dropped the ball for this product. Do not buy it if you have Comcast, you will not be able to use it. I still can’t believe that BestBuy and Fry’s will sell this product in an area where there is a monopoly of Comcast cable.

I cannot judge this modem on its performance, but the fact that the largest cable provider in the U.S. does not support this modem after several months of it being on the market says give it one star.

UPDATE: It’s compatible with Comcast now.

This cable modem is currently NOT compatible with Comcast. I didn’t know that some cable modems are incompatible with certain internet providers, the product description makes it seem like this modem will work with anything.

I’ve called Comcast a few times and they say they plan on certifying this one, but they haven’t done it yet so you can’t use it. This is unfortunate because Comcast has certified the previous model, the SBG900, and that one is an excellent modem with built-in wifi. So it saves you the money/space/clutter of having to buy an additional router. Even worse, the SBG900 has been discontinued.

So I have to return mine, but will probably re-purchase it once it gets certified. I haven’t used the product, so no basis to rate it, but I had to give a star-rating to post this. Just wanted to give the warning of incompatibility with Comcast.

I got this thing to save the $5 modem lease fee from comcast. In time it’ll pay for itself and after that I’ll be making money, or something.

Doesnt save any desk space for me because I like to have at least one computer and my ps3 wired. So I went from a modem and wireless router, to a wireless modem and 5-port switch.

The modem itself works. Plugged it in, called comcast, and presto, online. Setting up the wireless so that my jerk neighbors dont steal bandwidth wasnt difficult either. Supports WEP, WPA, WPA2, AAA auth, all kinds of crap. If you’re not tech savy then it can be a hassle to get it configured just right. The firewall is configured very tight out of the box so be ready to configure that, port triggers, etc.

The wireless signal is strong enough for me. I havent tested it’s range or anything though.

    I say get it.

It works great. Easy to install. The signal is good all over the house. I hope it works like it is doing it so far for a long long time.

I bought this modem to replace a Motorola Surfboard SB5100 because I wanted to have a wireless connection to my PS3 in order to connect to Playstation Network and to stream movies from Netflix. (I’d had the SB5100 for about 5 years and it was a great modem, no problems.) I have the SBG901 connected to my computer with an ethernet cable and my PS3 is in the next room, about 16 feet away and with one wall in between. Setup was easy; I didn’t use their setup software, just plugged the modem in and called Cableone so they could register the new modem. The PS3 setup was also relatively easy; it recognized that I now had a wireless connection and all I had to do was select a few defaults and enter my MAC address/password. I’ve had the modem for about two months with no real issues; it is somewhat slower to come up than my old modem, and I’ve had to reset it a few times when it’s had trouble connecting, but I get a good signal to my PS3 and have watched several Netflix movies. I haven’t played any games online so I can’t speak to that, just done some shopping and gotten some updates for games I already had. I’ll be very happy if it proves to be as reliable and long-lived as my last Motorola modem.
