  1. These would be fine radios if the technical specifications were not misleading. We purchased these for a trip to Jackson Hole thinking these could be a good way to communicate where cell service is spotty. We were lucky to get 4 miles range with lots of noise. Now that I have the required FCC license, I’ll be finding some 5 watt radios on eBay. I’d send these back but 30 days had passed before we realized they were unsuitable as advertised.

Well I didn’t test this in any wide open spaces or accross water where I would have got the best results but I tested it through the woods and mountains and it started breaking up at 0.5 miles. Switched to high power and it stayed connected up to about 1.5 miles but not nearly the 35 miles on the box.

I should start of by noting that I do realize that the packaging range is for mountain to valley communication. In this case the packaging actually notes this, warning that the range in urban area will be something like 2 miles. A lot less that the 35 miles advertised, but still pretty decent – or so I thought when I was buying it.

Reality is very very different though. I tested it several times in different part of the city and the result was always the same – even when the two radios are at the opposite sides of a straight street, about 150 meters away from each other (less than 1/10th of a mile) it was impossible to hear each other. And not because of the interference – the radio didn’t even DETECT that the other one was working. The communication could only occur when we were less than 100 meters from each other. I can get better performance by using a rolled up newspaper used as a megaphone.

I was obviously disappointed. Especially since I’m getting a better performance from my previous walkies which advertise a 2 mile (mountain to valley) range. Those at least work over about half a mile in an urban environment.

So though I must admit that the features as well as the interface is very nice and the flashlight feature is great too, the horrible range performance makes this a product to avoid.

We had been looking at talkabouts for a long time and finally decided to get some. We ordered 4 (2 sets) and after they charged, we tried them out in our town to see how far we could go. We didn’t even get 2 blocks from home and you couldn’t hear a thing. Then we went skiing up in the mountains, there we still couldn’t get good range. When one of us was at the bottom of the hill and the other at the top, you couldn’t hear a thing.

Bottom line is you need to spend a lot of money to get really good walkie-talkie’s, these just won’t do it for you. The kids like playing with these in the house, but not good for anything else.

  5. It’s what I expected, am not sorry for purchase.

Bought it to communicate with spouse when vacationing out of the country.

In congested areas you will only have reception for 1.5 miles which is good enough.

I would purchase this radio again.
