I was so anxious for this phone to be released for the Verizon network….now I regret buying it! The phone hesitates when coming out of sleep mode to where I literally have to wait 8-12 seconds for it to respond to keying a phone number! It also has a tendency to “face dial” while I’m on the phone and about twice a day it randomly makes a call to a different number while I’m talking to someone.

I’ve had Samsung PDAs for years and should have never switched to the HTC. Regrets, regrets…

IT is generally a nice phone. But be aware, it is very slow for web-browsing and lag sometimes. I only need the basic functions, so the phone is OK for me.

    Updated 1/2010:

This phone sucks. I gave it another chance, however, as I predicted, it’s not good in an emergency. It just locks up for no apparent reason – the soft keys lock up. The design also is prone to human error. Plus, there’s no easy way to turn off bluetooth to use the speaker phone. You’re stuck on the bluetooth earpeice, even if you want to use the speak phone or the handset. So many things wrong with this phone, that I’m not going to take the time.

    My original review:

I have a Nokia e71x, Blackberry Bold, and HTC Tilt 2. The HTC has the “coolest” features and reception is exceptional, but the Blackberry is *by far* the most usable.

Many other users have waxed on about the features of the HTC. However, here are a few deal killers for me:

    1. My phone had a tendancy to “lock up”. I had to wait for up to 1 – 2 minutes for the phone to respond at times. If I needed to make an emergency call during these times, I would have been in trouble.

    2. Sometimes the screen saver won’t turn off or the screen won’t turn back on when someone calls. There was no way to turn it back on, other than powering down.

    3. The keys are extremely touchy. I’ve had the phone dial out repeatedly, even when I did not touch the screen. Additionally, the UI isn’t the greatest (eg, while scrolling through screens), so there are a lot of unintentionally dialed numbers, etc.

If my phone didn’t have these problems, I’d have liked it much more. I say “would have” because I got rid of it. Hence only 3 stars.

Let me start off by saying I have made my living for years with Microsoft products. So I am biased towards Microsoft. I went to the local AT&T store to see the phone in action before purchasing. First, the AT&T sales rep did not know anything about the phone. The phone on display was totally flaky and needed to be rebooted a couple of times during the demo. Not the best sales presentation.

I had my Tilt for a year and half was ready to upgrade. I purchased two refurbished Tilt 2s for my wife and myself from the AmazonWireless store. Since I was upgrading, the cost was $50 each. I thought that was a good price.

First, the refurbished phones looked brand new when we receive them. Setup was easy and I love the HTC implementation of TouchFlo. Definitely needed on top of the out dated Windows Mobile UI. Feature for feature, this phone has pretty much everything. After my sales presentation, I did not have high expectations for the phone. I have been blown away both functionally and the big bright screen has a wow factor.

I have only had it for a few days and I put it through its paces right away. I pretty much use ever feature the phone provides. So far it has been exceptional. I will admit, sometimes when I click something, it may take a second or two before it loads, but I can live with that. The new Outlook mobile that comes Exchange Server 2010 is awesome.

Since I work in technology, I don’t mind fussing with it if there are issues. A couple of times my first Tilt had some issues. I figured out fixes and did a couple of hard resets in the year and half I used it. This is not a problem for me since I can get my phone back to where I want it in short order. For all the complaints against Microsoft, the OS really does have many features just not a pretty UI. The TouchFLO UI helps cover some of the ugliness of the UI.

Tilt 1 owners beware the Internet Sharing is now disabled on the Tilt 2 without laptop tethering. You can either add the laptop tethering service or find a workaround.

I am very pleased with my purchase. Of all the technology I use, my phone is the most important. I use it all time. I use it running with Bluetooth headphones. Creating playlist is much easier using the HTC app versus Media Player. I use Google maps and/or Bing everyday to check traffic on my way to and from work. I browse the Internet all the time. I have written custom .NET apps for my phone. I loved my first Tilt and so far this phone is a significant improvement from that phone.

I am not saying this phone is for everybody. But for me, this is great phone. Since I have only had it for a few days take my review with a grain of salt. I will update the review if I do find issues.

  5. I have had the Tilt 2 for 2 months now. The phone is big and heavy compared to other phones I have had. The size and weight don’t bother me, but I can see some wouldn’t like it. This is my first Windows phone and there was a lot to learn. I came from the original Palm platform. The phone crashed a few times on the first day because I opened too many programs. I found you can change a setting to just close programs rather than minimize, and no more problems with crashes. The screen and keyboard are nice. I like the FM radio. The stock software is good and I have added to it. The contact management is way better than Apple or Google. The web browsing is slow. My wife has an Iphone and I don’t see Safari working much better. Sometimes I have to wait a couple of seconds for an application to load. This is not a big deal in my opinion. I like the stylus and find it more precise than my finger.

If you want many ways to customize your phone then this is a good phone for you. I was very happy with my last phone and I have figured out how to everything with this one that I did on the last.
